NBC News picks up story from The Paper

Those of you who regularly read The Paper will remember a cover story we did called 'Where Heroes Once Flew." http://thecommunitypaper.com/archive/2010/07_29/index.php

It was a story about tiny Milligan, Nebraska . . . and the crashes of B-24's during training flights, and how the residents of Milligan formed a committee to track down the relatives of those airmen who died . . . and to honor them with a memorial, 60+ years later.

Well, that story, as we say in the business, 'had legs.' It made it all the way to NBC. We received the following email from Diane Snyder, the niece of one of the airmen who died, and the person who put us on to the story originally. The rest is self explanatory and the NBC news clip at the end is very, very well done:

Lyle –

Through tears I just watched this linked segment that was on

this morning’s ‘Today Show.’ It’s almost 4 minutes in length.

(Fortunately, Janet Bartels, the Chairperson of ‘The Milligan Memorial

Committee,’ e-mailed this to me this morning.)

When you see the two women embrace near the end of the segment,

the woman with the neck brace is Minnie Klein, the widow of

2nd Lt. Melvin Klein, the only survivor on my Uncle’s plane. Minnie

is 90+ years old. The younger woman is Karen Williams Edelmann,

the daughter of the pilot, 2nd Lt. James Williams. Karen was born

6 weeks before her father died in the crash. Their meeting, captured

on the video, speaks for itself…

Well done!

Diane

As NBC's Mike Leonard reports, Milligan, Neb., will never be mentioned in the same breath as Normandy or Iwo Jima, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be mentioned at all.

  1. I must be in a crying mood these days because my tears have become many. What a wonderful story of the fallen air men and NBC in an around about way picked up the story. Also on the story about the four teens, for a moment early on I thought, "Why are they letting all the boys ride in one car and all the adults are in another?" You fooled me. Now I can laugh when thinking about the ending. The total ploy was great. Lita Bowles
